Summer Reading @ Portland Place School

Avoid a slump in literacy over the summer by encouraging your son or daughter to read over the holidays.

We have a rewards scheme in place for students at the moment.  Here is how you take part:

1) Read a book over the holidays

2) Tell Ms O'Shea when you come back to school

3) She will check you have read the book and you can earn 5 merits!

4) To earn further merits design a new book cover for the book you read to convince others to read it.  This will be displayed in our new library space.

Here are some ideas for reading over the summer:

Ancient Greek History

Some of our year 5 students have recently finished a topic on Ancient Greek History and it prompted me to see what books in the library we have for further reading on this topic. The Ancient Greeks were famous for their mythology and three library titles featuring myths caught my eye. These books provide an easy way of introducing children to classics.

1) Mythology: The Gods, Heroes and Monsters of Ancient Greece
2) Myths and Legends by Anthony Horowitz
3) Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief
There are some great websites about this topic.  Have a look at the links below:
BBC's Ancient Greek Learner Guides
Perfect for recapping what you learned in class.
British Museum : Ancient Greece
